When Prakash Bagli, the owner of a juice and snack centre at Kadubisanahalli, found his debit, credit cards, PAN card, Aadhaar, vehicle documents and a few leaves from his cheque book missing from his office, he immediately called his bank. It was only after checking his bank account did he realise that he had been robbed of ₹2.5 lakh.

He asked the bank to block the cards, but the damage was done, even though he had not received a single alert of any transaction.

The perpetrators had used the information in the documents to get the bank to change the contact details, including email id and phone number. They allegedly used the cheques to withdraw ₹1.64 lakh. They also ran up an online shopping bill of ₹88,500.

Bank officials told Bagli that a man claiming to be ‘Linglud’ had come to the bank with a cheque and withdrawn money. Based on a complaint, the Maratahalli police have taken up a case of cheating.

“We are trying to track the goods ordered online. We are also analysing CCTV footage from the bank,” said a senior police officer.
