
In what is being seen as a major victory for Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in face of BJP’s aggresiveness to make inroads into the state, the BJD secured a landslide in the Bijepur bypoll, defeating BJP’s Ashok Panigrahi by more than 41,0933 votes. BJD candidate Rita Sahu secured around 1,02, 871 votes and captured nearly 57 per cent of vote share in the crucial seat, which was vacated following the death of her husband Subal Sahu in August, 2017. On February 24, Bijepur recorded nearly 81 per cent voter turnout.
In Madhya Pradesh, where bypolls in two seats were held, Congress candidate Brijendra Singh Yadav won by 2124 votes in Mungaoli while it secured a victory in Kolaras by 8083 votes. While Mugaoli recorded 77.05 per cent polling, the turnout in Kolaras was 70.4 per cent, the Election Commission said. Minor clashes were reported during the bypolls for the two seats which were held on February 24.
Congress candidate Brijendra Singh Yadav and BJP’s Bai Sahid are among the 13 candidates in fray in Mungaoli, and it is a direct fight between Congress’ Mahendra Singh Yadav and BJP’s Devendra Jain in Kolaras where 22 candidates are in the contest. The bypolls were necessitated due to the death of Congress’s Mungaoli MLA Mahendra Singh Kalukheda and its Kolaras MLA Ram Singh Yadav.
Both seats are in the Guna Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Jyotiraditya Scindia. Kolaras and Mungaoli have 2,44,457 and 1,91,009 eligible voters respectively. Congress’ win will bolster Jyotiraditya Scindia’s chances of becoming the chief minister face for the party. The BJP, meanwhile, is wary of an upset after recently losing in three seats — two Lok Sabha and one assembly seat — to the Congress in Rajasthan. The results are expected to give a boost to either of the two main parties in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the state assembly polls later this year.
Congress wins Kolaras bypoll by 8083 votes. Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Yadav secured 82515 votes, while BJP's Devendra Jain got 74432 votes.

After 18 rounds of counting, Congress is leading by 2885 votes in Mungaoli. In Kolaras, Congress ahead by 4379 votes after 14 rounds of counting.
After her win in the Bijepur bypoll, BJD candidate Rita Sahu said, "I'll work for the all-round development of the people in our area and strive hard to fulfil my husband's dream." Rita Sahu was fielded as a BJD candidate in the bypolls after her husband Subal Sahu died in August, 2017.
Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief, Naveen Patnaik expressed his gratitude to the public. "I would like to express my gratitude to public for showering their blessings on BJD. I am sure we will do very very well in 2019 General Elections as well," he said.
The BJD has secured a landslide victory in Odisha’s most important electoral contest after the 2017 local body elections, blunting momentum of the BJP and raising questions on the survival of the Congress in the state. BJD candidate Rita Sahu secured around 1,02, 871 votes defeating closest rival BJP’s Ashok Panigrahi by more than 41,000 votes, and capturing nearly 57 per cent of total votes cast by the electorate.
In Mungaoli, the Congress candidate is leading by 5244 votes after the 11th round of counting. In Kolaras, the Congress party candidate is leading by 3245 after 10 rounds of counting.
We are now into the seventh round of counting of votes for Mungaoli. The Congress has retained its slender lead of 3,834 votes over the BJP.
Meanwhile, in Kolaras, it appears to be close between the Congress and BJP. The opposition party is leading BJP by just 2,474 votes.
Odisha: BJD increases its lead over BJP by more than 32,579 votes.
In Madhya Pradesh' Mungaoli, Congress is leading over BJP by 2,038 votes in the fifth round of counting.
The BJD has stretched its lead to over 25,000 over the BJP in Bijepur bypoll.
The BJD is currently leading over BJP by 12,000 votes. While the Congress is in third.
