The Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has won the bypoll for the Bijepur Assembly seat by a margin of 41,933 votes.

"I would like to express my gratitude to public for showering their blessings on BJD. I am sure we will do very, very well in the 2019 General Elections as well," Patnaik said.

The bypolls were necessitated following the death of Congress MLA Subal Sahu in August 2017.

Subal Sabu's wife Rita Sahu was fielded by the BJD from the seat. Ashok Panigrahi was the BJP candidate and Pranay Sahu the Congress pick for Bijepur.

The bypoll was a triangular contest between the ruling BJD, the Congress and the BJP in the Bijepur Assembly seat.

The voting for Bijepur Assembly seat took place on Saturday with a turnout of nearly 72 per cent.

Bijepur had become a prestige issue for the BJD and BJP ahead of the Assembly election and the General Election scheduled next year.
