The residents of Thammampatti and its surrounding areas have urged the State Government to take steps for opening a government arts and engineering colleges in the backward Thammampatti town for the benefit of the students belonging to the weaker sections.
The students of the western blocks of Attur, Vazhappadi, Pethanayakkanpalayam, Gangavalli pursue their higher education at the Arignar Anna Government Arts College at Vadasennimalai near Attur.
Of the four western blocks, Gangavalli block is on the boundary of Salem, Tiruchi, Namakkal districts and far away from Attur.
The opening of a government arts college in Thammampatti town in Gangavalli block will immensely help the poor students of all the three districts.
In the absence of government arts and engineering colleges, the students of Thammampatti and its surrounding areas proceed to towns such as Namakkal, Tiruchengode and Rasipuram in Namakkal district; Thuraiyur, Puthanampatti in Tiruchi district; apart form Attur, Thalaivasal, Deviyakurichi towns in Salem district for pursuing higher education in government and private colleges.
There is not even a single private arts and engineering college in Gangavalli and Thammampatti towns. As a result, many belonging to weaker sections who could not offer high fees collected in the private colleges in the above areas, opt for farm works after completing Plus-Two.
A cross section of the people of Thammampatti town said that a government arts and engineering college in the town will immensely benefit the poor and downtrodden.
A government arts college in Thammampatti will also help the students of the tribal villages on Kolli Hills in pursuing higher education without any difficulty.
The people complained that they have been urging the government through various forums for opening government arts and engineering colleges in Gangavalli block for more than a decade, but their pleas have fallen only in deaf ears.
