Himanshu Kalia, popularly known as ‘Ambulance Man’ in the country has announced he would tie-up with private ambulance operators and also set up a blood donor directory in the city.
Mr. Kalia conducted awareness programmes about blood donation at different spots in Hyderabad on Monday. He said the blood donor directory would tap the donation potential of 15 lakh people.
“We are campaigning about blood donation and looking for volunteers. A call-center in New Delhi will help coordinate the efforts,” he said.
Mr. Kalia and his wife Twinkle run a dozen ambulances in New Delhi with income earned from their jobs in the insurance industry. This money is pooled into their social service organisation, Society for Shaheed Bhagat Singh Help and Care.
“If the drivers are not around and there is an emergency, one of us drives the ambulance. We plan to tie-up with private players in cities like Hyderabad to ensure the poor can get free ambulance services,” he said, attributing his desire to serve masses to a life-changing event when he was 14.
