Ganapathy says his record is spotless and the case has been foisted on him

Bharathiyar University vice-chancellor A. Ganapathy, 67, has filed a bail application in the Madras High Court in a case booked against him by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) sleuths on the charge of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹30 lakh from an Assistant Professor on probation.

The vice-chancellor was arrested following a trap paid by the police in which he was caught red handed while accepting ₹1 lakh in cash and four post-dated cheques for the rest of the amount from the complainant T. Suresh, 49, at the former’s official residence in Coimbatore on February 3.

‘No allegation’

In his present bail application, the petitioner claimed to have been appointed as vice-chancellor due to his “spotless and meritorious” service record. However, now at the behest of certain disgruntled elements, a false case had been foisted against him, he said.

Further, pointing out that the complainant was appointed as a probationer only during his tenure as vice-chancellor, the petitioner said that there was no allegation against him of having demanded any money for the appointment.

When such was the case, the alleged demand for regularisation in service was baseless, Mr. Ganapathy contended.
