The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has sought the help of residents’ associations in each ward for the smooth conduct of the Jeevanam Athijeevanam programme, which was launched as part of its Animal Birth Control initiative.
The survey of street dogs, health camps for pet dogs, and awareness programmes for children will be organised from March 3 to 9 by 50 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.
The reception committees set up in all wards for the purpose will be headed by the respective ward councillor and will include representatives of residents’ associations, office-bearers of other local organisations, and Kudumbasree workers. The ward committees have to inform the designated officials of locations where stray dogs camp at night. They also will have to identify the spots so that night vision cameras can be installed to assist the survey.
The ward committees have to make arrangements for the vaccination of pet dogs. It will be held in all wards simultaneously on March 4. Pet dog owners will have to register in advance to attend health camps for their pets.
The committees will also have to make arrangements for the organisation of awareness classes for children of schools in the respective wards. Children will be taught how to behave in the presence of street dogs as they are the victims of stray dog bites quite often.
Ward committees and residents’ associations will be awarded at the end of the programme based on their performance. The survey and other programmes will be completed by March 8, and the final report will be submitted on March 9.
