The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed that all public pay-and-use toilets in Madurai, maintained by self-help groups, be brought under public auction, while upholding an earlier order of a single judge.

A division bench of Justices T. S. Sivagnanam and R. Tharani said that self-help groups could also participate in the auction, while disposing of an appeal by a batch of self-help groups against a single bench order.

The single bench, in 2017, directed the Corporation Commissioner to conduct a public auction for maintenance of public pay-and-use toilets and said self-help groups could participate in the auction.
