Pitso: Tshwane derby the 'biggest derby' on the pitch

2018-02-27 12:29

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns manager Pitso Mosimane has claimed that the Tshwane derby is bigger than the Soweto derby in football terms, if not spectatorship.

Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw with local rivals SuperSport United on Saturday, with Percy Tau cancelling out Thabo Mnyamane's opener.

This weekend, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will go head to head at the FNB Stadium. While Mosimane acknowledges the historical significance of this fixture, he claims that it does not live up to the Tshwane derby in terms of on-field action.

"The game draws up to the occasion, it's the Tshwane derby," Mosimane said after drawing against Matsatsantsa, his former club.

"For me it's the biggest derby. On the pitch it's the biggest derby and on the grandstand it's not the biggest derby.

"You must also understand how old is SuperSport United and you must also understand how old is Mamelodi Sundowns. We don't have the tradition of 1970, 69 or whatever years to build up this kind of derby.

"People of Tshwane must come and watch the Tshwane derby. It's the biggest derby. It was a good game."

Mosimane's Sundowns lead the Absa Premiership by four points, with second-placed Pirates one point ahead of Chiefs heading into their showdown.

SuperSport United have endured a dismal season and currently sit 12th, but they turned heads with a run to the CAF Confederation Cup final, where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to TP Mazembe.
