Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy has condemned the remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Congress would face electoral defeats in the north-east and Karnataka and that the party would be left with Puducherry alone in its kitty.
Mr. Modi, addressing a meeting here on Sunday, had remarked that after the electoral defeats in north-east and Karnataka the Congress would be left with the option of showing “Mr Narayanasamy as a specimen.”
‘Democratic process’
Mr. Narayanasamy told The Hindu that victory or defeat in elections was part of a democratic process. Stating that the Prime Minister was factually wrong, the Chief Minister said the Congress was in power in Punjab. The party was confident of winning two States in north-east and would retain Karnataka, he said. The Congress would make a comeback in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh where elections were slated to be held later this year, Mr. Narayanasamy said.
Reminding the Prime Minister about the early days of the BJP, he said the saffron party started with two seats and lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009. “The Prime Minister has conveniently forgotten the facts. Victory and loss are part of our democratic system,” he said.
The Congress may be out of power at the Centre and in several States but it was a force to reckon with. People were looking for a change at the Centre, he added.
