more-in

A woman donated part of her liver to her husband who was suffering from liver failure, and the transplantation was done at a hospital in the city.

Nisha (34) brought her husband, Jageer Hussain (36) of Perambalur district, to GEM Hospital here in the first week of February with complaint of liver failure.

Transplant

After the couple’s consent to transplant a part of the liver from Nisha, a team of surgeons headed by C. Palanivelu, Anand Vijay and Senthilnathan removed the right part of her liver through laparoscopy and transplanted it in her husband on the night of February 13.

A portion of the liver could be donated as it is a regenerative organ.

Even if half of it is donated, the liver can grow back to its full size in two months, doctors said.
