As many as six persons were killed in two separate car accidents in Tirupur district on Monday.
Of them, four persons died in the accident that happened near Kangayam when the car they were travelling fell into a pit after hitting a tree alongside Kangayam - Chennimalai State highway.
Police sources said the deceased were identified as M. Lakshmi (35), K. Ranganathan (54), his wife Jothi (40), and V. Jenitha (4).
Four others who were travelling with them sustained injuries. They were M. Venkatesh (29), who was driving the car, R. Sangeetha (23), Gokulpriya (19) and Pavithra (nine-month-old).
All of them were returning to Salem after a pilgrimage to Palani.
In the other accident, Arul Shankar (35), a native of Eripalayam, and Manjula (22), who hailed from Bodipatti, died after the car they travelled fell into a canal near Udumalpet.
In Coimbatore district, three persons, including a six-year-old girl, were killed after two motorcycles collided near Sirumugai on Sunday night. While three persons were travelling in one of the bikes involved in the accident, the other one had four persons.
Those killed in the accident have been identified as Gokula Kannan (21), of Meenampalayam, Mahesh Kumar (31), of Akkarai Sengapalli near Annur, and Thaniska (6), neighbour of Mahesh Kumar.
The accident occurred on Meenampalayam to Irumbarai Road around 8 p.m. on Sunday. According to the police, Gokula Kannan and two of his friends namely Tamil Selvan (21) and S. Tamilvannan (22), all residents of Meenampalayam, were travelling in a two-wheeler from Meenampalayam to Irumbarai to attend a marriage reception at Karamadai.
As they reached near the bus stop at Muduthurai junction, their two-wheeler collided with a motorcycle ridden by Mahesh kumar which came from the opposite direction. Three persons namely Savithri (25), wife of Jeeva Kumar, her daughter Thaniska, and Chitra (38), wife of Velliyangiri -- all neighbours of Mahesh Kumar -- were riding pillion with him. The four persons were heading to Puliyamapatti to attend a marriage reception.
Gokula Kannan, Mahesh Kumar and Thaniska suffered severe injuries in the collision. Though passers-by alerted for an ambulance, it reportedly arrived late. The three persons died on the way to hospital.
In Erode district, three youths were killed after their motorcycle hit the rear side of a moving bus near Sathyamangalam on Sunday night.
V. Sakthivel (19) and S. Sridhar (19), electricians and native of Elur in Thukkkanaikkenpalayam, along with their friend R. Mahendran (21), a third year engineering student, were going on a two-wheeler when the accident occured. Sakthivel was riding the vehicle while the two others were riding pillion. A bus halted at the Elur bus stop and was about to move when the two-wheeler hit the bus. In the impact, all the three were thrown off the vehicle and fell on the road.
While Sakthivel and Sridhar died on the spot Mahendran died on the way to hospital.
Their bodies were taken to Government Hospital in Sathyamangalam. Bungalow Pudur police registered a case. Post-mortem was done on Monday and their bodies handed over to their relatives.
