Mutual fund investors know the importance of choosing a good fund manager to take care of their money. Most investors are familiar with star fund managers and those who appear regularly in the media. However, nobody actually sit and compare who made the maximum money for investors.
That is why ET.com Mutual Funds decided to find out which fund managers made the maximum returns over a period of five years. We have considered only open-ended equity schemes for the exercise. If the fund manager managed more than one scheme, we simply took an average of the five-year returns of the schemes. See table below for top 10 equity fund managers.
When we looked at three-year average returns, some fund managers like Motilal Oswal AMC’s Gautam Sinha Roy, PPFAS Mutual Fund’s Rajeev Thakkar, etc. were in the top list. However, they did not find a place in the final list as their schemes have not yet completed five years.
How we did it?
We started with equity funds including largecap, midcap, smallcap. We also considered equity linked savings schemes (ELSSs) and sectoral schemes for our study. We have taken open-ended schemes, regular plan and growth option. There were a total of 284 such schemes.
Next, we removed schemes with AUM of less than Rs 500 crore. We also removed schemes which have not completed minimum five years. After applying these filters, we were left with 138 schemes. Next, we took average of five-year CAGR returns of all schemes managed by one fund manager. We then sorted the fund managers on the basis of the score. This gave us a list of top 10 equity fund managers who have generated highest average returns over a period of five years for investors. Data was taken from Ace Mutual Fund.
