Six teenagers were crushed to death and one was critically injured when they were hit by a speeding train in Pilakhua area of Hapur on Sunday night.
Eyewitnesses told the media that the teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, were crossing the railway tracks when trains arrived simultaneously on the two railway tracks at Sadiqpura area of Pilakhua. The youngsters were caught by surprise.
All the victims were friends and were daily-wage labourers. They were residents of Pilakhua.
The accident angered the local residents who laid siege to the railway tracks and staged a protest. They told the police that the area was not well lit and many, including school children and the elderly, regularly crossed the tracks near the accident spot. Locals also complained that there was no warning before trains crossed the area, which is densely populated on both the sides.
Superintendent of Police Hemant Kutiyal and the District Magistrate Krishna Karunesh reached at the spot and pacified the agitated crowd.
The protesters demanded that compensation be paid to the family of the deceased.
