Barcelona - Mobile phone maker Nokia unveiled five new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday.

HMD Global, the manufacturer of Nokia smartphones, announced a portfolio of new Android smartphones, including the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, new Nokia 6 and Nokia 1.

The company also relaunched another icon for the second year in a row, the 8110 sliding smartphone, but this time with 4G.

The 8110 also includes Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Search, Facebook and Twitter, in an attempt to bring on the return of the slider phone.

The smartphones will feature Android’s Oreo operating system.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco will be reminiscent of more recent Nokia smartphones and will feature a 13 megapixel camera with Zeiss optics lens and Nokia spatial audio.

The device combines a curved edge-to-edge pOLED 2K 5.5-inch display with smaller bezels and moulded body curves.

Nokia boasts that the Sirocco’s stainless steel frame is 2.5 times stronger than 6000 series aluminium, and the display is reinforced by 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 to prevent scratches.

The device is expected to be available from early April in foreign markets and will retail for a global average price of €749.

The Nokia 7 Plus will feature a dual 12 and 13 megapixel camera with Zeiss optics lens and will be fitted with a 3800 mAh battery which Nokia boasts will offer 2 days of battery life.

The new Nokia 6 features a 2.5D display with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platform to boost performance.

The 7 Plus is expected to be available in early April and will fetch a global average retail price of €279.

The smallest of the launches, the Nokia 1, will be available in different colours and will retail for a global average retail price of $85.

Florian Seiche, CEO of HMD Global, said that the company started its journey with huge expectations from fans and a massive responsibility to deliver on the legacy of one of the most innovative brands in its space.

“Since then we have reintroduced well-loved icons, forged partnerships with friends old and new and delivered our pure, secure and up-to-date Android experience across our smartphone portfolio. Last year we shipped over 70 million Nokia phones,” he said.

“As we’ve expanded our portfolio we’ve always maintained one vision: to deliver great Nokia phones that live up to the standards that our fans expect. It has been an exhilarating time and as we look ahead, we plan to build on our success by expanding our portfolio and giving consumers a wide range of Nokia phones they can love, trust and rely on,” he added.
