Watch Live Stream: International Space Station Astronauts Return to Earth

After 168 days in space, three astronauts are set to head back to Earth Tuesday night. The astronauts are scheduled to undock from the International Space Station at 6:08 p.m. ET NASA announced in a news release.

Mark Vande Hei and Joe Acaba of NASA and Alexander Misurkin of Roscosmos were expected to land at 8:31 a.m. Wednesday morning in Kazakhstan, or 9:31 p.m. on the East Coast of the United States.

On Monday, the astronauts on board the ISS completed the change of command ceremony during which Misurkin, the Station Commander for Expedition 54, handed station command over to his colleague Anton Shkaplerov, also of Roscosmos.

The astronauts of Expedition 54 conducted hundreds of hours of research while on board the ISS. The two astronauts from NASA were part of an effort to increase the U.S.'s representation at the station so astronauts could spend additional time on research.

Before the astronauts finish their time in space they have to toss on their entry suits and check the Soyuz for any air or pressure leaks.

Coverage of the undocking of the Soyuz pod that the three astronauts are set to travel back to Earth in was scheduled to begin 5:45 p.m. ET. The actual undocking of the pod was scheduled for 6:08 p.m. ET and expected to last about 20 minutes.

Once the astronauts undock, they are expected to deorbit from space and go through reentry before landing with the aid of a parachute. Deorbit was scheduled for 8:38 p.m. and the landing was scheduled for 9:31 p.m. ET, according to NASA.
