State to have Excise police stations

| | BHUBANESWAR | in Bhubaneswar

Taking a cue from other States, the Odisha Government is considering proposals to set up Excise police stations soon to curb the illegal liquor trade and the hooch manufacturing units that often lead to hooch tragedies and loss of revenue.

Excise Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera told reporters on Monday that already the proposal for setting up these police stations has reached a final stage.

“Efforts are on to set up Excise police stations in different parts of the State. We hope to seek police assistance till our enforcement squad is fully equipped in this regard,” said Behera.

Official sources said that after the Excise police stations come up, it would play a crucial role intensifying enforcement activities of the Excise Department.

Presently, the Excise Department is dependent on the police to carry out raids on illegal liquor brewing facilities and bootlegging.

A number of instances of excise sleuths being assaulted by notorious liquor mafia have been reported from different parts of the State.
