A 22-year-old woman was stabbed with a kitchen knife by her 26-year-old former fiancée after she refused to marry him in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri on Saturday night, the police said.
‘Victim stable’
The victim has sustained multiple stab wounds on her torso and is undergoing treatment at a city hospital, the police said. Her condition is said to be stable, the doctors said.
“The woman was on the terrace on Saturday when the accused barged inside the premises and took her inside the kitchen. He bolted the door and attacked her with a knife. She sustained wounds on the back of her neck, forearms and chin,” said Rajendra Sagar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
Soon, her family members heard the screams and broke open the door and rescued her.
“The accused, Lucky, is a resident of the same locality. After the incident, he was thrashed by the locals and her family members before they handed him over to the police. He has been arrested and charged with attempt to murder,” said a police officer.
The victim’s family members said they had called off her engagement with the accused around six months ago because he was an alcoholic and also did drugs. He often picked a fight with locals in an inebriated condition, alleged the woman’s family members.
Fights with locals
“My daughter and Lucky were supposed to get married in March this year. They had got engaged in August 2017. After that, we discovered that Lucky was unemployed, and would often get drunk and fight with local residents. He was also addicted to drugs. My daughter asked him to quit drinking and get a job but he did not listen to her,” said the victim’s father.
‘It was mutual’
Upset over his bad habits, the woman’s family finally called off the wedding around six months back after discussing it with Lucky’s parents. It was a mutual decision, said the victim’s family.
“We were looking for better match for our daughter but Lucky kept troubling her constantly. He would often force her to marry him. He used to call her in an inebriated state and express his love for her. He also threatened her with dire consequences if she dared to marry someone else,” added the victim’s father.
A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Sultanpuri police station and investigations are underway, added the officer.
