VIJAYAWADA: Minor tension prevailed at old government hospital in Hanumanpet when the kin of Vanga Chittemma (27), who died after kidney failure due to botched cesarean surgery, staged a protest in front of the hospital demanding justice on Sunday.

A native of Kalabalem village in Krishna district, Chittemma had a caesarean surgery in Old GGH and gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 1: 30 am on February 19. A few hours later, she complained of severe stomach pain and was operated upon again and moved to the ICU.

“Without our notice, junior doctors removed her uterus. Since then, Chittemma slipped into coma and referred to Guntur GGH. She is said to be in a serious condition and breathed her last on Sunday,” said family members. They further blamed doctor’s negligence that the caesarian operation in Vijayawada old government hospital was performed by inexperienced junior doctors.

“Those doctors should be punished severely by cancellation of their degrees,” the kin demanded. GGH Superintendent Dr. Raju Naidu said Chittemma had been on the ventilator and underwent dialysis on Wednesday as her urine output got blocked.

However, the inquiry ordered by Director of Medical Education (DME) and a committee with three doctors are yet to submit their report. “Action on them (junior doctors) will be initiated against them after the committee report,” said an official from the hospital.
