Bollywood actor Sridevi passed away at the age of 54.
A day after her death, Dubai police Monday said veteran actor Sridevi died of “accidental drowning” in her hotel bathtub after losing consciousness. The case has now been transferred to the “Dubai Public Prosecution”, which is expected to complete legal procedures.
“Following the completion of post-mortem analysis, Dubai Police today stated that the death of Indian actress Sridevi occurred due to drowning in her hotel apartment’s bathtub following loss of consciousness. Dubai Police has transferred the case to Dubai Public Prosecution, which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases,” the Dubai police tweeted Monday evening. Sources said Indian authorities were waiting for clearance from Dubai prosecution before proceeding further.
According to Dubai-based Gulf News, the actor was under the influence of alcohol. She then fell into the bathtub and drowned, the report stated. Gulf News also attached a copy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government’s forensic report on its Twitter handle. The report, citing accidental drowning as the cause of death, has a stamp of the “Ministry of Health UAE” and director of preventive medicine, Dubai, Dr Sami Wadie. The report mentions the actor’s full name,
“Sreedevi Boney Kapoor Ayyappan”, her passport number, date of the incident (February 24, 2018) and cause of death. The 54-year-old actor was in Dubai for the wedding of Mohit Marwah, her husband and film producer Boney Kapoor’s nephew. Sridevi is survived by Kapoor and their two daughters Janhvi and Khushi. A statement issued on Sunday evening by Sridevi’s family said: “Boney Kapoor, Janhvi, Khushi and the entire Kapoor, Ayyappan and Marwah family is deeply bereaved and shocked by the untimely loss of Sridevi Kapoor.” The process of getting bodies back to India from Gulf countries, including the UAE, is a time-consuming process according to sources.
After Dubai police and prosecution gives clearance, a death certificate will then be issued by police, officials said after which the Indian consulate in Dubai will cancel her passport and issue a certificate which allows the body to be transported back to India.
Before the body can leave the country, it must be embalmed at Al Maktoum Hospital Mortuary, which requires another police no objection certificate. The process takes at least three hours and the body must be identified both before and after the embalming, sources said. Gulf News also reported that The hospital will then arrange transportation where the body will be weighed and paperwork will be processed. It is only after these formalities that the body will be flown back to India on a chartered flight.
Sources said Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Navdeep Singh Suri and Consul General of India in Dubai, Vipul and Indian Consulate representatives were coordinating with Dubai Police and other authorities concerned. “It usually takes about a week or more sometimes to get this whole process completed. We are trying to get it done faster than usual,” a source said.
