CBI director asks officers 'not to spare anyone' in bank fraud cases

Continuing with its investigations into the multi-thousand crore fraud of PNB, the agency on Monday grilled three general manager (GM) level officers of PNB.
NEW DELHI: The director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Alok Verma has instructed his officers not to “spare anyone” found involved in the serious bank fraud cases registered by the agency.

The director has also asked his officers to expedite the investigation and conclude the same within a time frame.

CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said the director has “directed the officers in-charge of the investigations to take all necessary steps to ensure that the bank fraud cases are concluded within a given time frame. He has asked the officers not to spare anyone found involved in these scams”.

Continuing with its investigations into the multi-thousand crore fraud of Punjab National Bank (PNB), allegedly involving diamond merchant Nirav Modi and others, the agency on Monday grilled three general manager (GM) level officers of PNB. The three GM level officers included a former GM of the bank.

While two GM level officers were working with the international banking division, the third was employed with the treasury division. Also, statutory auditors of PNB have been examined.

Moreover, the agency has issued look out circulars against over 10 officials/persons involved in the fraud. These are in addition to the look out circulars issued earlier by the agency against Nirav Modi, his wife, brother and uncle Mehul Choksi.

CBI WRITES TO CVOS
Also, CBI has written letter to chief vigilance officers (CVOs) of five banks whose international branches were involved in issuance of letter of undertakings (LoUs) belonging to Nirav Modi’s companies. These are: SBI, Canara Bank, Bank of India, Allahabad Bank and Axis Bank.
