I&B Minister Smriti Irani asks Doordarshan to take maximum advantage of its wide reach and enrich content

sk

Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani has said that Doordarshan should take the maximum advantage of the reach created by DD Free Dish to produce quality content.

Inaugurating the 24th International Conference and Exhibition on Terrestrial and Satellite Broadcasting in New Delhi today, she said, the broadcaster should also improve the revenue generation through advertisement.

Mrs Irani said, India is set to have 530 million Smartphone users by end of this year, second only to China. The Minister also said that the total advertising spending is expected to grow from 9.6 per cent last year to 12.5 per cent this year.

The Minister asked the Broadcast Engineering Society (BES) to conduct outreach programme with students and faculty of Broadcast Engineering Institutes.

She said, the strength of Broadcasting sector in the country should be seen not by the number of channels available but by the quality of content provided by it.

Ms Irani also stressed on enriching of the content of Prasar Bharti. She said, every year taxpayers pay 2,500 crore rupees to Prasar Bharti to keep the public broadcaster in the broadcasting arena alive and thriving.

BES EXPO 2018 is organised by Broadcast Engineering Society.

The expo is rated as the biggest broadcast technology show in India. Nearly 300 companies from 25 countries will display their products in the Expo directly or through their dealers and distributors in India.
