Normally, black pepper vines wither during peak summer due to the shortage of water. However, a farmer has been successful in watering pepper vines through an innovative method, at Kirundadu near Napoklu.

Understanding the shortage of water during summer, farmer Kadyada Anu Kaverappa chalked out a novel way to irrigate pepper vines using an innovative drip irrigation system.

Using pots full of water and drip tubes, he ensures water supply to pepper vines round the clock.

After storing lake water in pots, they are covered with plastic nets to ensure that no leaves or twigs fall inside it. Later, a glucose tube is used to supply water. The pots are filled with water once in 75 days.

The farmer has spent Rs 40 for purchasing pots and Rs 10 for plastic nets. Through this method, Anu Kevarappa increases the yield.

Speaking to DH, Anu Kaverappa said, "I have been using drip irrigation system using pots to water pepper vines for the last two years. The pepper vines are well nourished. The size of black pepper has increased along with an increase in the yield."
