The objective behind the satellite terminal station at Naganahalli is to decongest the existing facility in the city to ensure the movement of additional trains and provide better service to passengers, besides introduction of new trains to enhance connectivity.
The proposed satellite terminal is in the Bengaluru division of South Western Railway and is about 8.55 km from Mysuru railway station.
Sources in SWR told The Hindu that the satellite terminal envisages six platform lines of 750 metres length, eight stabling lines (725 meters each), four maintenance lines (620 metres each), two sick lines (225 metres each), and one wheel line (50 metres).
In addition, there are plans for four high-level island platforms and one high-level platform on the station house side, besides a high-level platform at the extreme end of the running line — each platform being about 585 metres in length.
For the benefit of passengers, each platform shall be provided with shelter and connected through footover bridge, said sources.
The project can augment the capacity of Mysuru to operate additional trains. The existing Mysuru station at present handles 90 passenger trains per day and its capacity was saturated. The satellite terminal can take care of the projected 10% growth in the passenger traffic in Mysuru area for the next 25 years.
