CHENNAI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday handed over a memorandum to visiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi while seeing him off at the Chennai Airport, official sources said. They added that the memorandum sought the Centre’s support to the ongoing developmental schemes and new projects, besides raising key demands concerning the State. However, the government did not divulge the contents of the memorandum.
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam was also present when Palaniswami submitted the memorandum.
It assumes significance in the wake of the Chief Minister’s demand that Modi take steps to form the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), as mandated by the Supreme Court in its February 16 verdict on the long-standing Cauvery water dispute. The CM put forward the demand at an event held to mark the launch of the Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme in Chennai on Saturday.
An all-party meeting, presided over by Palaniswami on February 22, unanimously adopted a resolution to take a delegation to call on the Prime Minister and urge him to implement the apex court’s judgment, though it curtailed the State’s share of water by 14.75 tmc.
