GENEVA: The UN rights chief on Monday criticised the use of vetos by some permanent members of the Security Council to block desperately needed action in places like Syria.

"The responsibility for the continuation of so much pain lies with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council," Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said at the opening of the 37th session of the Human Rights Council, insisting that "it is time, for the love of mercy, that China, Russia and the United States... end the pernicious use of the veto."
