The Karnataka High Court on Monday clarified that the City Police Commissioner may transfer the task of investigating the disappearance of Kumar Ajitabh, a techie, to the Special Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Justice Vineet Kothari passed the order after an additional advocate general (AAG), who represented the commissioner, sought the court’s permission to transfer the case to the CID while pointing out that the city police have other issues, including those related to conduct of elections to the State Assembly.
No progress
The probe had been entrusted to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the commissioner following a direction by the court after the jurisdictional police were unable to make any progress. The commissioner claimed that around 80 police officers were engaged in the probe. However, the SIT too was unable to make any progress.
Last call
The AAG pointed out to the court that the last person to call Ajitabh had secured a mobile connection by using fake identity documents and had made only one call from that particular number.
Ajitabh is missing ever since he left home on December 18, 2017 after receiving a call, apparently from a prospective buyer for his car, which he had offered for sale through a website.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Ashok Kumar Sinha, father of Ajitabh, seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. It has been stated in the petition that Ajitabh wanted to sell the car to partly fund his higher studies as he had secured admission in IIM Calcutta.
