Laboratory owner Raja threw acid on Yamuna on Sunday last

Yamuna, the 33-year-old acid attack victim in Madipakkam, died of burns at the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday.

According to the police, Yamuna ran out of the laboratory around 9 p.m. last Sunday after her employer threw acid on her. The locals immediately rescued her and she was admitted to the KMCH. “Though initially she was responding to treatment at KMCH, her condition deteriorated on Friday night and she died on Saturday morning,” said a police officer at the St.Thomas Mount police district.

The Madipakkam police arrested the laboratory owner, Raja, on charges of attempt to murder on Monday last. After her death, the police altered the Section and booked him for murder.

Yamuna and her husband Anand were residing at Sivasubramaniam Nagar in Puzhuthivakkam. The couple has a four-year-old daughter. She worked in a clinical laboratory located at Puzhuthivakkam.

Raja, a resident of Anna Nagar, was her colleague at a private hospital earlier. A year ago, Raja started the laboratory in Madipakkam and Yamuna joined the lab as a part-time staff a few months ago, the police said.

Police said that the laboratory was making losses and Raja had blamed Yamuna for it. An argument broke out between them last Sunday and Raja threw acid on her. Yamuna suffered 46% burns and was recuperating at the KMCH.

Police are investigating other angles to know if there was any other motive and if it was a pre-planned attack by Raja.
