Chasing a total of 286, New Zealand suffered an early blow with Colin Munro departing in the second over off Chris Woakes. Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill departed in quick succession with New Zealand reeling at 27/3 in the 10th over. Tom Latham and Ross Taylor both scored their half centuries. They took New Zealand over 200 after which returning Ben Stokes dismissed Latham for 79. Tom Curran provided another breakthrough in the very next over with Henry Nicholls departing on duck. Stokes struck again in his next over, dismissing Colin de Grandhomme for 2. Ross Taylor went on to complete his 18th ODI century but was dismissed by Adil Rashid after he tried to hit a reverse-sweep slog hit and was stumped by Jos Buttler.
