BHUPALPALLY: Overspeeding sand-loaded lorries are killing people in the Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. More than 20 people have lost their lives in accidents involving sand-laden lorries in the district in the past one year. In the process of earning extra money, drivers are going at high speed resulting in frequent accidents. Each driver earns about Rs 2,500 per trip and in order to do more trips, they drive the lorries at high speed and put the lives of people in danger.
Sand is being transported from Kaleshwaram via Warangal to Hyderabad. As the lorries overloaded with sand move at a very high speed, it has become difficult for vehicle users in the district to use the main road as they fear that they would be hit by moving lorries. For instance, last week, a lorry overloaded with sand hit a two-wheeler killing two persons on the spot. This led to protests and there was a huge traffic jam on the main road for over five kilometers. Similar situation is always witnessed on the NH 163 on regular intervals. In another incident, last year, a sand-laden lorry mowed over 30 sheep and the shepherd chased the lorry and stabbed the driver.
Recently, Mulug Tehsildar’s car was hit by a overspeeding lorry injuring him severely. Despite this, the officials have failed to control the speed of the lorries. Following increase in road accidents, district in-charge collector RV Karnan along with district SP R Bhaskaran held a meeting with officials.
