NOIDA: The process of
medical termination of pregnancy (
MTP) for adult and minor expecting women who want to do away with an unwanted pregnancy, will now be available at three
community health centres (CHCs) of the district.
Till now, the facility was available only at the government district hospital where women could avail of the facility anonymously.
It will now be extended to the Dadri, Bhangel and Badalpur CHCs.
Since January this year, the Dadri and the Bhangel CHCs have already been catering to rape victims and married women who face threat to life due to a half-terminated foetus or a miscarriage.
It was not open to adult or minor women who wanted to wilfully terminate unwanted pregnancies.
The health department has said that any adult woman who wants to terminate pregnancy (less than 20 weeks) can now avail of the facility by giving her written consent while the minors will require a written permission from the parent.
“There have been many instances in rural areas where young girls were losing their lives because of wrongly terminated pregnancies in private centres. These deaths go unrecorded as the family members do not report the due to the 'shame factor' and societal pressure. Earlier, such patients had to go to the district hospital but they can now visit these CHCs as well,” Chief medical officer (CMO) Anurag Bhargava told TOI.
The identity of the woman will be kept secret and only the district magistrate or the CMO is authorised to get the details about the patients undergoing MTP.
Since the start of the MTP procedure in Dadri and Bhangel CHCs, 16 and 75 women have availed of the facility respectively.
A source in the Dadri CHC told TOI that as of now, the CHC is only catering to adult married women who have a miscarriage or come with a half-terminated foetus via abortion pill.
“Unmarried patients who want to do away with pregnancies have not come so far. Seniors will take a call on such a case in case it comes,” the source said.
