Statue debate lights up social media

more-in

Following the unveiling of Jayalalithaa’s statue at the AIADMK headquarters on her 70th birth anniversary, social media had a field day debating whom the statue resembled. Many names came up, but none of them were Jayalalithaa.

Memes galore

Soon after the unveiling, social media exploded with cheeky memes about how the face of statue did not resemble its intended subject.

But there were many other contenders: yesteryear actors Pandari Bai, K.P. Sundarambal, and Vadivukarasi, actor Gandhimathi and even TV personality Nirmala Periasamy.

Some saw the profile of Jayalalithaa’s associate V.K. Sasikala in the statue, while the more brazen memes suggested that it resembled Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, a popular leader among his community. Some suggested that Mr. Palaniswami had installed a statue of his wife.
