According to a report in DNA, Qureshi heads the People’s Political Front (PPF), which is a constituent of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Qureshi was paralysed after he was shot by militants in December 2009 and played a significant role in negotiations after Hizbul Mujahideen announced a truce in 2000, according to the DNA report.

According to a report in Greater Kashmir, the constable, Farooq Ahmad, was in critical condition when he was shifted to SKIMS Soura Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Militants also reportedly decamped with Ahmad's service rifle, according to the report.

Earlier on Sunday, a policeman was killed in an attack by militants near Charar-e-Sharief shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Badgam district. Constable Kultar Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police 13th Battalion was initially injured when militants attacked a security guard post outside the shrine and escaped with his weapon. He later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. Officials said the area was cordoned off and the hunt to nab the assailants is on.
