Proposed day long visit of former Congress chief and Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi's to her parliamentary constituency on Saturday was cancelled late on Friday night, reportedly due to her bad health. Her office announced the cancellation citing "unavoidable reasons" which forced the Rae Bareli MP to cancel her visit.
"Gandhi's day-long visit has been cancelled due to unavoidable reasons. We informed district officials about it late on Friday night," her representative in Rae Bareli, KL Sharma informed the media persons on Saturday morning. Sources said that the Party office in Rae Bareli as well as local district magistrate’s office kept waiting for Sonia’s final approval for the visit till late Fridaynight and finally they were informed above cancellation.
It may be mentioned that due to poor health, Sonia’s had last visited her Parliament constituency in June 2016. Since her victory in May 2014, she had visited Rae Bareli just once. Finding herself not fit to perform her duties, Sonia had deputed her daughter Priyanka Vadra Gandhi to nurse her Parliament while gave her responsibility of Party president to Rahul Gandhi. She also not make any campaigning during 2017 Assembly elections last year. Sources also said that Sonia would not contest next Parliament elections scheduled for 2019 and might field Priyanka.
It may be mentioned that Sonia was coming to Rae Bareli to attend a meeting of the district vigilance and monitoring committee. Besides attending the meeting, Sonia Gandhi had to inaugurate various schemes from MP's discretionary fund at Bhuemau guest house and also to meet party leaders. Sonia had to lay foundation stone of schemes under the Prime Minister Gramin Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) along with Sulabh Sauchalya, Barat Ghar, Dharamshala, RO Plant etc. A senior Congress leader said that Sonia will soon visit Rae Bareli to complete the above assignments.
