U.S. Olympic team captain and NHL veteran Brian Gionta signed with the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

The right wing's one-year deal is for $700,000, which will be pro-rated over the final six weeks of the season.

Gionta, 39, played for the Buffalo Sabres for three seasons but wasn't brought back last fall. Instead, he trained with the Sabres' AHL affiliate in Rochester in anticipation of being selected for the Pyeongchang Games, where the U.S. was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

He scored 15 goals with 20 assists in his final season with the Sabres.

Gionta has 289 goals and 588 points in 1,006 NHL regular-season games over 16 seasons. He was also captain of the Montreal Canadiens and helped the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup in 2003. Gionta has 32 goals and 26 assists in 112 career playoff games.

Before turning pro, Gionta had an outstanding career at Boston College, where he was the captain on the 2000-01 national championship team. He was the 82nd overall pick by the Devils in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
