The State Government has filed its application staking Geographical Indication (GI) tag for ‘Odishar Rasagola’. The move came on Friday three months after West Bengal was awarded the GI tag for ‘Banglar Rasogolla’.
The application was filed by Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC) Managing Director Ratnakar Rout with the GI Registry in Chennai. Finally, Odisha submitted detailed documents to support its claim for the sweet.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has been emphasising that the mouthwatering delicacy originated in Odisha. “It originated in Odisha and is offered at the Jagannath Temple as part of religious rituals by people of Odisha since the 12th century,” Patnaik had tweeted in November 2017.
That the unique sweet has been a part of centuries-old rituals of offering to Lord Jagannath is mentioned in a 16th-century Odia epic “Dandi Ramayana”.
Notably, the Puri-based Jagannath Sena has filed a GI application for ‘Jagannath Rasagola’.
