Wanted Meghalaya terrorist Sohan D Shira killed in encounter

GUWAHATI: Wanted terrorist Sohan D Shira, commander-in-chief of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), was today killed in an encounter by Meghalaya police.

Police had launched an offensive against Shira after he was found to have been involved in killing of NCP candidate for Willimanagar, Jonathone N Sangma, at Samanda block in East Garo Hills On February 18.


Meghalaya police said that Sohan was shot dead at around noon at Dobu A’chakpek during an encounter with the Garo Hills Police.


The GNLA is seeking a separate state of Garoland. The GNLA operates along with the anti-talk Ulfa (Independent) in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya, which is sandwiched between Bangladesh on south and Assam on north. This area has for long been used as the passage to move in and out of Bangladesh clandestinely.
