Root lauds 'fantastic' captain Morgan

2018-02-24 16:03

Hamilton - England's Test skipper Joe Root has doffed his cap to his ODI counterpart Eoin Morgan whom he thinks runs a tight ship.

Root was full of praise for Morgan who led England to a morale boosting 4-1 series win in Australia on the back of a disastrous Ashes campaign.

England's middle-order kingpin thinks that Morgan's leadership is one of the things that makes the ODI unit so good.

Speaking ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday Root told Sky Sports Cricket: "One thing I love about this white-ball team is Morgs' leadership.

"I think he's fantastic. I think he had a really good series as captain in Australia."

Root feels that the decision to put three aggressive batsmen in Alex Hales, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order paid off for the skipper Morgan.

He added: "I think he was very shrewd to change the batting order slightly so that we went really hard at them up front and I think it probably put them a little bit more on the back foot than they were expecting.

"I knew that my role would be to play second fiddle on occasion but I thought we got a really good balance with that, especially with the batting.

"Again, guys stepped up - people like Tom Curran coming in and performing like he did in that last game, Chris Woakes played a magnificent role throughout the series with bat and ball - and we just continued to gather that momentum going towards the World Cup."

England kick off their ODI series against New Zealand on Sunday in Hamilton.
