Talks of gears, mileage and fittings filled the halls of Raja Muttiah Mandram on the first day of The Hindu’s Auto Expo 2018 here on Saturday.

S. Rethinavelu, senior president, Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, inaugurated the two-day event and spoke on the rising affordability of the growing upper middle class.

“At the chamber, we keep an eye out for the auto and construction industries. It is evident with this display that more people are preferring high-end cars. This is the sign of a growing economy,” he said commenting on the purchasing power.

There were a total of 17 stalls offering customers a variety of models to choose from. The diversity existed in price range, features and brands. Premium car brands like BMW, Jaguar, Jeep, Landrover and Isuzu displayed their savvy cars. The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo which was recently launched in India was displayed for the first time ever in all of India, here at the expo.

Other household names like Ford, Tata and Renault were also there.

Super bikes like Harley Davidson bikes and UM Motorcycles attracted youngsters to the venue.

Canara Bank and State Bank of India explained to potential customers the ease of procuring car loans. Indian Oil Corporation Limited highlighted the importance of fuel efficiency and auto-mobile parts were also sold at the venue.

The expo is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m and ends on Sunday.
