Sixteen people have been arrested in connection with the brutal lynching of a tribal youth in Attapadi region of Palakkad district whose death sparked a widespread outcry in the state. The accused have been charged with sections of murder and will be produced in court on Monday. Confirming the development, Agali DYSP T K Subrahmanyan said that more people are under custody and being interrogated.
According to the police, the arrest of the 16 accused was made after the postmortem report revealed that the deceased Madhu had injuries on the head and bruises all over the body. The report also said there was internal bleeding and he had broken ribs. The postmortem was conducted at the Thrissur Medical college.
The Thrissur Range IG said cases under various IPC sections, including murder, and SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act would be registered against the accused. A case under the IT Act for circulating his photo on social media can also be registered, the IG said.

Madhu, 27, died in a police vehicle after being violently attacked by a mob that accused him of being involved in a minor theft. According to his family, he was mentally unsound and was living in a cave in the forest for the past several months. His mother, Mallika, and sister Chandrika told television channels that a group of nearly 10-15 persons went to the forest and thrashed him.

The state government also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the victim. Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister said, “The Government of Kerala has announced Rs 10 lakhs for the family of the tribal youth, Madhu, who was killed in a mob attack in Palakkad. CM has given directions to the Chief Secretary to disburse the amount forthwith.”

Tribal activists from across Kerala staged a protest this morning, blocking traffic at Attappady. The Opposition too observed ” Hartal” at Mannarcaud taluk, under which Attappadi falls.
Superstar Mammootty also spoke out against what Vijayan described as a “blot on Kerala’s progressive society”.
“Don’t call Madhu an adivasi. I would call him my younger brother… Don’t call a human being who steals (food) to remove his hunger a thief… Madhu, I am sorry,” wrote Mammootty on his Facebook page.

- Feb 24, 2018 at 11:04 pmAt a time when religious fervour is consuming people like never before, how come people are becoming devilish than devine? Is there something wrong with the revival sweeping across the state/our nation? My answer: The kind of religious passion dished out by our religio-political gurus has desensitised us so much that even when something like this happens we are not appaled to the extent of declaring a state-wide mourning to repent of our society’s moral depravity. We don’t need a diffe political system but a moral paradigm that can see man as man. When any kind of atrocity perpetrated against a human is justified as long as he is in the wrong camp, there is no hope for us. Wait and see how soon the 16 will be acquitted. Please don’t think this is a Kerala problem. This is the direction the whole nation is going, running behind a fic ious understanding of religiosity.Reply
- Feb 24, 2018 at 10:55 pmI have read readers giving religious and caste comments here. The incident as far as I know is not religion or caste related. It is a pathetic mob psychology. Of course, it should not happen. Not in Kerala, not anywhere. Hunger is not a crime. Where is human sympathy gone? Are we ferocious animals to behave in this manner? Coming from a generation who have felt pangs of hunger, I condemn the symptoms of arrogance and ill treatment to a fellow human being, less fortunate and mentally challenged as reported. True heroism, youngsters, is in forgiving and helping. Do not show courage attacking a helpless man or animal. I have seen people singing beating their bellies as tabla. All for getting some meager money to live. Help the under-privileged, help women, help children, help elderly. That is courage, that is heroism. Even at my age I give seat to pregnant women in bus. This kind of courtesy is needed. I sincerely hope Madhu's suffering will bring that into our lives. RIP, Madhu.Reply

Ubaid is the man who clicked the selfie . I am sure the moslems who like to comment here will their o.f.f.er. their apologies on behalf of their brethren . Muslims consider themselves and their religion superior to others , surely they must now apologize for their fellow muslims behaving like rabid d0gs.Reply
- Feb 24, 2018 at 11:16 pmI absolutely agree with these facts being circulated by a Speculating Press Agency based in Nagpur. Furthermore it has been proven that the 11 Muslims were Communists who had earned their money in the Gulf. There they were recruited by ISIS and given the task of further dividing Hindia. In contrast the 5 Hindus had just satisfied their Mummy L.U.S.T and had gone to a Shiva Temple for thanks giving, there they were busy in Bell Ringing when the Rich Violent Muslim men seduced these innocent Mummy loving Hindus, who were coerced into this inhuman act.
- Feb 24, 2018 at 11:19 pmAs you pointed out rightly, it is a mixtures of all religions (I don't know if Christians are there or not). The larger number of Muslims does not mean much. It is not entirely by Muslims. So it is an act by whoever was present. I suggest please do not abuse Muslims or Hindus. This is a group behaviour. Bad one, of course. Also I will tell you an interesting fact. If you read newspapers in Kerala, most crimes are committed by persons from all religions in a mix. In other words, there is no religion while committing crime. Moreover, there is no water-tight religious division in Kerala. All the people mix freely. Some Muslims may consider their religion superior. Hindus also can consider like that. A rationalist can think he is only right. But a true thinker must be above all such feelings and respect others' right to believe. Of course, one's belief should not harm others. Abusing others will only breed hatred which will go on multiplying. We are living in a pluralistic society.
