Security forces today gunned down GNLA Commander in Chief, Sohan D Shira in an encounter in Dobu, Sadugre in East Garo Hills in Meghalaya. Police sources in Meghalaya have confirmed the incident. Sohan was shot dead at around 11:50 am at Dobu A’chakpek during an encounter with the Garo Hills Police. The self-proclaimed commander-in-chief of the Garo National Liberation Army was active in the Garo Hills where the election is due on February 27. He was involved in several attacks on security forces and civilians as well.
Security forces have intensified anti-terrorism operations in the Garo Hills, 320 kilometres from state capital Shillong, after the killing of Nationalist Congress Party candidate Jonathone Sangma on Sunday last.
