Pune: The planned
traffic diversions on the
busy Karve
Road are expected to come into force from the first week of
March to facilitate Metro work on the stretch.
The traffic diversions were supposed to be implemented from February. However, they were postponed as various civil works for Metro are still under way. These pending works are expected to get over in the next 10 days, following which the changes in traffic movement near Nal Stop and SNDT will be implemented, MahaMetro officials said.
The changes have been recommended by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro), which is executing the Metro project on the Vanaz-Karve Road-Civil Court stretch.
As per the plan, vehicles coming from
Karve Road and Paud Road will not be allowed to travel towards Nal Stop Chowk after reaching Paud Phata. Instead, they will have to travel on the Canal Road outside SNDT up to Law College Road before taking a right turn to reach Nap Stop Chowk.
The plan of realignment of traffic was submitted to the traffic police department by MahaMetro for further recommendations. The department suggested various civil works to be carried out on the route before introducing the changes. The traffic department will conduct a review of the entire stretch in March, after which consent will be given to divert the traffic.
The MahaMetro officials said all the proposed works in the Nal Stop-SNDT area were in their last stage and are expected to get over in the next 7-10 days. “Major works pertain to reducing the width of footpaths on Law College Road, Canal Road and Karve Road, shifting of street poles and bus stops of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) from Karve Road to Canal Road,” the officials said. They added that the traffic police have also told them to remove the dividers at Athawale Chowk on Law College Road.
MahaMetro said they were working in coordination with civic officials to ensure that the changes in alignment of footpaths do not affect the drainage lines and storm water channels along the road. “About 9m space on the road will be used for Metro work. This space will be made open after completing the foundation work,” the officials said.
The Metro work on Karve Road is expected to continue for at least one-and-a-half-year.
