People take a look at the photographs displayed at Durbar Hall

KOCHI: A picture is worth a thousand words. Fancy checking out some of the stunning visuals clicked by news photographers in 2017? Then head for ‘Portfolio 2018’ - the annual photography exhibition of the Photojournalists Association- going on at the Durbar Hall Art Gallery.

The fifteenth edition of the expo showcases the best works of 39 journalists, giving an insight into various incidents captured from the city. This includes photographs like Vinayakan’s best actor-winning moment, the first Metro journey of migrant labourers and various other commendable, thought-provoking pictures.
The sorry state of waste management in the city, protest marches, sports and cultural activities are grabbing the eyeballs. Altogether there are 77 photographs presented in a 20x30 frame.

There was no criteria in the selection of awards and the best ones were picked up by photographers and displayed. The unpublished news photographs are also part of the exhibition. Organisers said  the photos displayed here might have been published in a small size or in black and white in the newspaper. Hence, visitors were delighted to see them displayed in a grand manner. School children were also brought by teachers to give them a chance to see various social issues that happened last year.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mayor Soumini Jain on Thursday with actor Sunny Wayne gracing the occasion as the chief guest. “Photographs have more impact than news. News photographs play a vital role in politicians’ life,” she said during the inaugural function. The exhibition, which is open to the public from 10 am to 7 pm, will conclude on Sunday. The photos are only for display and are not for sale.
