Condemning the murderous assault on its candidate Jagbir Singh Sokhi and his supporters in Ludhiana on Friday, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has asked the State Election Commission (SEC) to take immediate action in the matter.

The party apprehended that if immediate action was not taken, Ludhiana Municipal Corporation election would also witness violence and booth rigging on the pattern of Patiala Corporation Election.

“I have informed the SEC about the incident and also informed that outsiders are moving freely in Ludhiana and that there is every likelihood of Congress workers resorting to goondaism on the election day if not checked,” said SAD spokesperson and former minister Daljit Singh Cheema.

Cheema said that he had also informed the Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner about the incident and asked him to take strict action against those responsible for it.

“Jagbir Sokhi, who is the party candidate from Ward number 36, was attacked in Shimlapuri today. Congress workers attacked his car with bricks and other weapons wreaking it completely and injured him and three of his supporters,” claimed Cheema.

He said that party workers had resorted to a dharna to ensure justice is done in the case. He urged the State Election Commission to tighten security arrangements to ensure free and fair elections are held in Ludhiana.
