SHILLONG: Paucity of funds has forced the only Left party functioning in Meghalaya even before its creation in 1972 to refrain from contesting the assembly polls this time.

In this election season, when offices of other political parties are abuzz with activity, the CPI office wears a deserted look.

"We neither have sufficient funds nor cadre strength to contest the election this time. Contesting the assembly election entails a huge expenditure and we are not in a position to bear the expenses. We will contest the parliamentary election next year," said state CPI secretary Samudra Gupta.

Today, the party hardly has 100-odd members in Shillong. Most of the stalwarts who steered the party in its initial years in the state are all dead. "I feel sad about the state of affairs, but I till love my party. After all the ideology I have imbibed is still strong in me. My family members were active members of CPI. I inculcated the ideology from them," said Shankar Dutta (50), a CPI member since 1986. Shankar makes a living by painting signboards.
