Ganjam OPTCL Clerk caught taking bribe
Brahmapur: The Vigilance police on Wednesday caught OPTCL Junior Clerk Jugal Kishore Parida red-handed for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 8,000 from one Jayram Rout of Dhakinapur village in Ganjam district for processing the file to enable Jayaram Rout’s father Narasingh Rout to receive his pending EPF amounting to Rs 94,279. Parida’s residential Government quarter was also searched. He was arrested and forwarded to court.
NRI awards given
Phulbani: The NRI Indian Intellectual Forum awarded the NRI Literature Award to educationist Devdas Chhotray, film director Raju Mishra, Central University of Orissa, Koraput VC Prof Sachidananda Mohanty, writer Paramita Satpathy, Odishi dancer Kasturi Patnaik and Binaya Krishna Patnaik for their novel contribution in Odia language. Research persons in other languages like Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada and English were also felicitated. Among others, Rajya Sabha member AV Swamy, Dr Bhagabanprakash, Dr Anidita Sahu and Devendra Raut were present.

Consumer awareness drive held at Gop
Nimapara: A consumer awareness and training programme was organised by leading social organisation Nihida at the Ketakipatana gram panchayat office of Gop block on Thursday under the chairmanship of Nihida secretary Bhakta Bihari Mishra. Different aspects of the Consumer Act 1986 were discussed to create awareness among consumers, farmers, women, students and youths. They were made aware about receiving receipts while purchasing, carefully watching the expiry date, etc. Puri district Weight and Measure Additional Controller Gopal Samantray, Labour Education Board officer Sasmita Bhatta, Ketakipatana Sarpanch’s representative Benudhar Baral and Mahura Sarpanch Niranjan Mahari were present.
Dangerous electric pole threat in Nimapara
Nimapara: An electric pole at the Muslim Basti of Patpur under the Nimapara NAC has remained in a dangerous half-bent position since a long time. Hundreds of people, including schoolchildren, have been commuting on the concerned road daily. The pole poses threat to the commuters. Residents of the locality have complained about it several times at the Nimapara electric office but to no effect.
Slew of projects unveiled at Umarkote
Umarkote: A slew of developmental projects in the Umerkote Municipality were inaugurated on Wednesday by Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi and local MLA Subash Gond. The total cost of the projects is Rs 67 lakh mostly meant for development of the drainage system in the town and educational institutions besides a rest shed at Idgah (burial ground) of Muslims. Municipality Chairperson Pinki Agrawal spoke about various development programmes undertaken during her tenure. Municipality Vice-Chairman Sisir Nayak and Executive Officer V Prasad Rao and MP’s representative Kalu Panda were present, among others.
