KOCHI: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) took action against 1,298 vehicle owners in a special drive conducted in Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam on Wednesday. It also collected a compounding fee of `7.53 lakh in the drive, which was initiated as per the direction of the Deputy Transport Commissioner, Ernakulam.

The action was initiated against 24 vehicle owners for overloading, while 59 cases were registered for rash driving.

“We initiated action against vehicle owners based on the gravity of the violation. During the drive, 24 drivers, including those of private buses, were served with show cause notices for suspension of their licences. The drive mainly aimed at reducing accidents and make people aware of following MVD rules,” said an MVD officer.

The department also took action against 112 vehicle owners for altering the vehicle against the company manufacturing.
