Fencing the space below the facility will put an end to this problem

It is just six months since the flyover at Porur was inaugurated, and it is already plagued by the scourge of encroachments and illegal parking.

Two-wheelers, cars, cabs, autorickshaws and tricycles can be seen parked under the flyover; lack of fencing along the ramp of the facility has given rise to this problem.

Visitors to the shops along the service lanes and traders park their vehicles below the flyover.

Many cabs and goods vehicles are also found parked there, sometimes round-the-clock.

“At night, we find it risky to walk on the service lanes as miscreants loiter under the flyover, taking advantage of the darkness and empty service lanes. Fencing of the space below the flyover will put an end to this,” says S. Valli, a resident of Porur.

The significance of the new flyover, which is maintained by the State Highways Department, lies in the fact that every day, a sea of motorists from Porur, Mugalivakkam, Kundrathur, Iyyapanthangal, Gerugambakkam, Poonamallee, Mangadu, Somangalam and Kattupakkam use the junction to reach the central parts of the city via Aroct Road and Mount – Poonamallee Main Road.

The junction is also a key traffic point for vehicles coming in from neighbouring districts like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Vellore.

“Steps will be taken to fence the entire space below the flyover,” says a State Highways official.
