Six students of Pachaiyappa's College, who attacked some members of the public at M.K.B. Nagar near Vyasarpadi on Wednesday, were arrested by the police.
The public were attacked when they tried to chase the students, including two juveniles, who were waiting with sharp weapons to attack students of the Ambedkar Government College. Police said students of Pachaiyappa's College, Ambedkar Government College, Thyagaraya College and Presidency College travel in MTC bus route no. 57 that plies between Vallalar Nagar and Red Hills.
Fight in the bus
They create a ruckus by hitting the sides of the bus and singing songs. Two months ago, there was a fight between students of Ambedkar College and Pachaiyappa's College. “We received information about the possibility of a clash, hence we deployed a patrol team outside the Ambedkar College, which comes under our police station limits,” said E. Saravanan, Inspector, Law and Order, M.K.B. Nagar police station.
On Wednesday, seven students of Pachaiyappa's College — Sudhakar, Malarmannan, Manikandan, Mohan, Dinesh and two juveniles — arrived at the signal near Ambedkar College. CCTV footage shows a group of men chasing the students and after a few seconds, the students chase away the public. One of the student is seen carrying a knife.
Public attacked
“As the students were carrying knives, members of the public tried to chase them away. However, the students threw stones and even attacked them. Kamalammal, 46, of B.V. Colony, who was waiting for a bus, suffered a cut on her right hand,” the police officer said. The police patrol team nabbed the six students.
“One student is absconding,” the inspector said.
