Rajkot: Appointment of in-charge head of life science department sparked a row in Bhavnagar-based Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji University on Friday.
The university gave the charge to head of marine science department Indira Gadhvi and this has caused resentment among students and assistant professors of the life sciences department, who alleged that vice-chancellor has violated the rules.
Students of life sciences department submitted a memorandum to VC in this regard on Friday and sported black clothes as a mark of protest.
Gadhvi was given the charge after head of life sciences department Bharti Dave retired in the second week of February.
A student leader Karn Vasoya said, “The charge should be given to assistant profession Bharatsinh Gohil because he is serving in the life sciences department for the last 10 years. As per university statute 187, the charge of departmental head can’t be given to the faculty of other department.”
Vice-chancellor of Bhavnagar University Shailesh Zala said, “I haven’t violated any rule. The charge should be given to reader only and Indira Gadhvi is head of science department, so I can’t give this charge to Gohil by overruling a reader only because it’s students’ desire.” There are nearly 130 students in the department.
Gohil also claimed that he is the most eligible person for this charge.
